Molly calls herself a tax geek. In actuality, she enjoys fitting the pieces the tax code provides into a plan that meets each clients’ needs. Recognized for her excellence in taxation law by the James W.H. Stewart Taxation Award, Molly relies on that basis to create comprehensive estate, tax, and business planning for individuals, families, and small businesses of all types.
She appreciates the personal nature of estate planning and enjoys investing the time to create a plan her clients want and use. Estate plans are not meant to be just words on a page, they must hold the steps and ability to actually accomplish the client’s goals, during life as well as after death. Molly encourages her clients to coordinate their estate and business planning to make sure that one has the capacity to work with the other. Molly believes a good estate plan is one of the best gifts you can give to those you leave behind because after all, an estate plan customizes what the law will do by default.
From beginning to end, Molly helps her clients identify goals, and then, set up a structure that actually meets those goals. One of the wonderful things about life is that it is always changing, but good planning is what allows us to welcome those changes with confidence and calm.
Molly has helped landowners in numerous counties around the Commonwealth protect their property with conservation easements. She has a unique working knowledge of agriculture, property, and tax law, which she uses to help clients and easement holders come together to protect precious resources for future generations. Molly respects and values the importance of open space, both environmentally and economically. Molly believes it is a privilege to help landowners exercise their property right by protecting their land and its resources. Conservation easements are also excellent tax tools for some families. Molly has seen conservation easements save farms that otherwise would be gone forever. Environmentally, these easements protect forests, improve water quality, preserve historical sites, and shelter rare and precious species of plants, animals, and wildlife habitats. However, these tools are not a good fit for every landowner or property, and Molly helps landowners digest the benefits and drawbacks of this preservation tool.
Before going to law school, Molly and her husband ran two separate companies. Now, Molly is once again a business owner running her own firm. This gives her more practical experience as she understands first-hand what motivates and frustrates small business owners. From starting a business to planning for the next generation, Molly enjoys helping clients choose which type of entity will best serve their needs, both for taxation and liability advantages. Molly frequently drafts governing documents such as complex Operating Agreements for multi-member LLCs, or shareholder agreements with customized provisions for stock corporations. In addition, Molly often revises governing documents for business entities to allow for life events such as devising interests, death, disability, retirement, or transfer of the business.
